The mystery of the missing sock; revealed

It has happened to all of us at the best of times. Knowing you wore a pair of socks then sent
that very same pair into the washer and hung them out to dry. But somehow, every single
time it’s as if the pair gets divorced and you never see the one partner again. It’s so
saddening and frustrating as if they were soul mates that everyone thought would last
forever.
It was said that there was a one sock island somewhere far far away where no human could
ever go. An island created just for your one sock, where they would be sipping pinacoladas
and soaking up the sun with not a care in the world.
It was about a week or so that I made the discovery of my missing sock. I had just taken the
wet clothes out of the dryer, turned around to put on a jacket as the weather was slightly
miserable and watched a sock dart across the floor. Being curious I followed it and as you
can imagine when I turned the corner it was gone. I thought maybe I had an extra glass of
wine last night and was envisioning weird things. As I hung the clothes out my puppy
Phantom, a two year old Jack Russell, was playing with a blue ball around my feet. I normally
don’t mind this, but this time I was surprised and taken back by what I saw. On his tail, there
it was a yellow and purple stripped sock I lost about half a year ago. As I pulled it off his
now wagging tail he tilted his little head as in to say “hey that’s mine.” We walked back into
the house; I was still holding the sock between my fingers. Phantom now getting jumpy
from not getting the sock back decided to roll onto his back and admit his defeat. Suddenly
he leapt up and sprinted towards the front garden I watched him dig up a flower bed I had
been meaning to get rid of for ages. And there it was the sock that had darted across the
floor earlier.
I couldn’t stop myself from giggling wondering what else he has hidden out there.
So there you have it, there isn’t a mysterious island of missing socks tanning on white sand
beaches but a puppy who loves playing with brightly coloured socks.

happiness decoded

How do you define happiness?
Does it mean having a smile on your face like an old teddy bear that’s
grinning from ear to ear?
Is it doing the things you love, like flying a kite, drawing or singing
even though you’re not good at it?
Or is it the freedom to do anything, fly to Paris or Ireland on a
leisurely holiday or spontaneously finding a hundred rand note in the
back pocket of an old pair of jeans? Or is it the luxury of not having
to count the coins in your wallet when you see something that you
really really really want?
Let’s face it, it would be fantastic to do all of those things but what if
you were alone and had no one to share all those moments with?
Being happy is about being surrounded by people who would do
anything in the world as long as they’re doing it with you. From
having kite flying battles to dropping everything for a last minute
holiday to France, being able to share an experience with someone
special is the ultimate happiness.
It’s a space where you are at your most comfortable with no qualms
or reservations and where the people, or person, who you’re with
makes you feel totally at ease.
But happiness is not about the material things or the lavish dream
destinations or even the ever-flowing bank account. Yes, those things
are awesome to have and honestly having people to share those
things with is equally cool but for me, being happy is about having
found that one person who makes me feel totally at ease and lets me
be… well, me. Now that’s true happiness.
